Description
Manchester Event Volunteers (MEV) Improving skills and employability of local people.

Manchester Event Volunteers is an established volunteer brokerage service and a legacy of the Commonwealth Games. Following the Games, the volunteer programme attracted further funding to continue its success in attracting disadvantaged individuals into volunteering and providing training and quality volunteering opportunities as a progression route to employment.

The Manchester Event Volunteers developed from the Volunteer Crew at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and has ensured that the “count me in” attitude to volunteering has been sustained. A model of Good Practice has been developed for event volunteering, which can be replicated by other local authorities and voluntary organisations. The Project sits within the Economic and Urban Policy Group of Manchester City Council.

MEV maintains a database of over 2,500 enthusiastic volunteers who continue to support a wide range of community, national and international cultural and sporting events.

The service also helps to build sustainable neighbourhoods by providing volunteer support for local community projects. The service works closely with partner organisations to promote the benefits of volunteering to disadvantaged individuals including regeneration partnerships, Jobcentre Plus, Millennium Volunteers, Disabled Living and Women’s Action Forum. The marketing strategy focuses strongly on community and regeneration areas.

Following an induction session, volunteers are offered the opportunity to undertake qualifications in Event Volunteering, which are offered at entry levels 1 and 2. Modules offered within those qualifications include an introduction to voluntary work; teamwork; stewarding in public places; health and safety and volunteer mentor training. Attendance allows the course tutor to identify further training needs (e.g. Skills for Life). Additional training can also include disability awareness, Child Protection and Welcome Host. Training opportunities are provided through established partnerships with local FE providers.

A handbook has recently been developed which explains the service in detail. This includes policies (e.g. equal opportunities, code of conduct), procedures and contact details. This will be issued to new volunteers during an initial induction session.

MEV has developed a Code of Practice for working with clients, which sets out responsibilities to volunteers and guidelines in relation to the selection, management and training of volunteers. This requires the signed agreement of the client.
