Description
Hull Community and Voluntary Services Supporting sustainable development of volunteers and community groups

The role of Hull CVS is to support the sustainable development of voluntary and community groups, and volunteering, in order to promote justice, equality and improved quality of life, working in partnership with other community and voluntary sector organisations in Hull.

GoldStar funding relates to the Volunteer Support Project, the aims of which are to develop volunteering opportunities for people with extra support needs and to promote volunteering for this group of people. Additionally, the project is to develop and disseminate good practice resources for volunteer involving organisations, including a Good Practice Guide for Working with Volunteers, a Resource Pack and a Good Practice Checklist.

Hull CVS have already developed and disseminated a good practice guide and resource relating to working with volunteers. This covers:

arrow Supporting volunteers

The Volunteer Centre has taken the lead role in developing the Compact Volunteering Code of Practice within the local Compact, consulting with volunteer involving organisations in the voluntary and public sectors.

All literature is designed to include people from the widest variety of backgrounds and abilities, with literature in other languages and formats to suit different needs.

Under GoldStar funding the Volunteer Centre is planning to run a number of Diversity Training events. The Centre previously ran one of these events in September 2005, with workshops covering diversity and awareness, interpersonal and communication skills, managing difficult situations and the supporter/partner relationship.

In relation to recruitment and selection of volunteers, task descriptions are available for every task and appropriate selection guidelines are in place for different tasks. Signposting to other more relevant opportunities is used whenever appropriate.

Every volunteer is given a formal induction alongside an induction pack, which contains a tick list and information on all training available. Two information packs ‘Volunteering: Getting Started’ and ‘The Volunteers Portfolio’ are also given to every volunteer. All volunteers are supervised and supported formally on a monthly basis with the option of the volunteer requesting extra support at any time if the need arises.
