I’ve always wanted to do reception work but it wasn’t always practical. Having gained a couple of work placements at the local Civic centre through Gateshead Access Panel, I got the opportunity to join GAP itself as a volunteer. That was three years ago and it’s the best thing I’ve done. I particularly liked the idea of working with GAP because all the volunteers are also service users. We’re helping people like ourselves and that’s something worth working for.
What do you do?
I work mainly on the reception at our headquarters. I take and make calls, process the mail and keep the office in good order. Our work here is enhancing and improving the lives of those with disabilities and long term illness in the community. I'm one of twenty volunteers helping the eight full time staff. We create guidelines and provide consultancy to make things more accessible and life easier for our service users. GAP also provides training and help that disabled volunteers like myself need to be able to come
to work.
Why do you do it?
I like the idea of working for a project that helps me to help people like me. I love doing reception and I’ve got a lot to offer. The good thing here is that we’re treated equally and made to feel like valued workers who are all part of a team. I do two and a half days a week here and I always look forward to coming in because I know that they need me.
How has the project helped you?
First of all, they’ve given me all the support I need to do my job. From practical help such as phone headsets and an adjustable desk, to skills training such as adult literacy. Or even simply get the necessary taxi to work every day that I couldn’t otherwise afford. It’s also been really nice working with people who understand that for some of us, things can take a bit longer to achieve. I’ve been able to build up my confidence and ability in small steps without feeling under constant pressure to deliver.
What do you get out of volunteering?
It’s given me an equal chance to get a job and do the kind of work I really
want to do. I love the idea of helping other people and be able to learn new things.
Best of all, it’s just brilliant being involved. I can’t wait to get out of bed in
the mornings.
