Volunteering & ex-offenders
Northern Education and Resettlement Information Services (NEARIS) helps adults on the margins to achieve a positive future through learning and skills. It works in Greater Manchester, running training courses in hostels, day centres, probation offices and ducation centres.
NEARIS held a one day event about ex-offender volunteering and launched their volunteering with a criminal record booklet. Their main aim was to raise awareness of ex-offender volunteering. They had presentations from the probation service and the volunteer manager at NEARIS, this was then followed by an inspiring story from an ex-offender of how volunteering has led to employment.
It was well attended with 50 delegates from across Manchester and the surrounding areas, there were opportunities to attend two workshops and for discussion about ex-offenders. The delegates were placed in geographical groups and focused on how ex-offenders could be encouraged into volunteering and how this could be used as a pathway to employment.
The day ended with everyone filling out two “to do” notes which will be sent to us in two months as a reminder.
