Sharing Good Practice Event:

Peer Mentoring

Date: 13th March 2009

Time: 9.00 – 1.20 pm

Greys Education Centre is Bedfordshire’s Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) and they meet the statutory education of all permanently excluded pupils within Bedfordshire and those with long term medical needs, pregnant girls and LAC students.

The Greys Education Centre ‘e-Learning Provision’ is in its third year as a provision and gives  access to all 17 Bedfordshire Upper Schools to a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Students, parents, schools, peer mentors are fully involved in a partnership approach.

Greys education centre held a half day conference aimed at schools who are thinking of adopting a peer mentoring scheme in Bedfordshire. They shared their own experiences and e-learning platform and explained how they use it to support students and their mentors.  It was attended by the mentoring and befriending foundation who gave a short introduction to what mentoring can entail and what support they provide for mentors.

There was also a presentation from three young people who work with peer mentors in schools, it was very interesting and gave an insight into the training that is needed to set up a peer mentoring scheme.
