The Volunteer Centre Carlisle is a service provided by Carlisle Council for Voluntary Service, and is part of a national network of agencies concerned with volunteers and volunteering.
One of the activities that the Centre deals with is the development of good practice. The effective dissemination of good practice to other organisations has evolved into a good practice itself, the main features of which are as follows:
Identify specific areas of good practice - certain subjects are essential to the successful functioning of organisations, such as recruitment, management, and retention of volunteers;
Keeping records - of new organisations registering with the Centre;
Early introduction to good practice - newly registered organisations are introduced to the concept of good practice at a one-to-one meeting and given information on the Centre's Good Practice Guide;
Provide ongoing support - this is provided by the Centre where areas of practice are identified as needing improvement, including visits, information, advice and guidance;Organise networking meetings - each meeting is focused on a specific topic for good practice.
The Network meetings are also a good opportunity to bring diverse specialist sectors together;
Continuing updates - the Centre uses a monthly e-mail bulletin to pass on tips on good practice when involving volunteers;
External sources of advice - the Centre works in partnership with Cumbria Learning Links to identify training needs to improve good practice, and to promote training courses to local members.
