The gateway to Bideford is nearly complete as children grabbed their paint brushes to help. More than 20 local children helped paint seagulls on a mural alongside the football pitch.
The wall is waiting for the final few touch-ups by artists Merlyn Chesterman and Rod Nelson before it is complete.
The project, which took six months, was the brain child of Bideford's James Saumarez, who was inspired by seeing places brightened by similar murals in New Zealand.
James then entered the Journal's Community Payback Campaign, which enabled the people of North Devon to choose which local projects they would like community sentence offenders to carry out.
Voted by the public as a great idea, James then had the help of offenders to paint the wall, with the artists doing the bird outlines and the children helping fill
the area in.
James said: "The idea of the project was to get the whole community involved and I believe this has happened.
"People have been encouraging and I have received feedback that this was a good project and opportunity for Bideford."
